AI SEO
"AI SEO" gets used for two unrelated things: getting found inside AI-generated answers, and using AI tools to produce SEO work faster. They deserve different answers, and only one of them is a strategy.
Two meanings, one page
Both, because buyers arrive searching the term with either in mind.
- Being found in AI answers. A real discipline with testable levers. We cover it in depth under Generative Search Signals.
- Using AI to do the work. A tooling question. It affects how fast things get done and it is not, on its own, a competitive advantage.
What works for being found in AI answers
The levers with the strongest evidence are unromantic, and none of them involve a special AI tactic.
| Lever | Confidence |
|---|---|
| Content readable without JavaScript | Established. Most AI crawlers do not run it |
| Answer-first structure with self-contained passages | Established |
| Cited sources, named statistics and attributed quotes | Established, and the largest tested lift for pages not already ranking |
| Consistent entity information everywhere | Established |
| Original data nobody else has | Established |
| Presence on the third-party platforms answers draw from | Established |
| Structured data as a citation trigger | Weak. Useful for other reasons |
| llms.txt | No evidence any major platform uses it |
What does not work
Two ideas circulate widely and are worth naming.
Prompting engines repeatedly to teach them your brand. There is no mechanism for this. Models do not learn from the prompts users type, search queries are not a training signal, and sessions do not persist. Services selling this are selling activity.
Keyword density for AI. Stuffing had no measured benefit for conventional search and has none here. What raises a passage's odds is specificity and evidence.
Where AI genuinely helps do the work
In analysis and throughput rather than in judgement. It is good at processing volume: extracting entities across a competitor set, clustering keywords by intent, drafting structured content that a person then verifies, spotting patterns in log or analytics data.
It is unreliable at anything requiring accountability. It invents citations, states figures with unearned confidence, and produces competent copy that says nothing new, which is precisely the content that earns no citations.
We use AI where it saves time and check what it produces. Nothing goes on a client site because a model asserted it.
Why there is no separate AI SEO package
Because the work is the same work. Clean rendering, clear entities, well structured content and genuine authority earn rankings and citations alike. Splitting them into two products would mean charging twice and letting a client buy half a foundation.
It sits inside the SEO program, where the results appear on one report next to rankings, traffic and leads.
How AI visibility is measured
By running the questions your buyers ask across multiple answer engines on a schedule, and recording whether you are named, how prominently, and which sources were used instead. A single check is an anecdote; the schedule is what makes it data.
The competitor-source half is the actionable part: it converts a vague ambition into a specific list of pages to go and earn.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO replacing traditional SEO?
No, it is extending it. Traditional ranking still drives traffic and still feeds what gets cited. What has changed is that ranking alone no longer guarantees being the source an answer uses, so visibility has to be measured on both surfaces.
Should we block AI crawlers to protect our content?
That is a business decision rather than a technical one, and the trade is straightforward: blocking protects content from training use and also removes you from the answers those engines generate. Worth knowing that training crawlers and search crawlers are controlled separately, so you can allow the one that makes you visible while blocking the one that trains.
Do you use AI to write our content?
We use it as a drafting and analysis tool, and everything published is reviewed and corrected by a person. The requirement that every page contain something true that exists nowhere else is not something a model can satisfy on its own, which is a useful constraint.
