Partly. ChatGPT is good at the writing and structuring work, and it will produce a keyword list, a content outline or a meta description in seconds. What it can't do is see your site, verify the facts it gives you or tell which of fifty possible fixes is the one that changes anything.
Where ChatGPT Is Useful for SEO
Several jobs that used to take an afternoon now take minutes.
- Drafting and RewritingFirst drafts, alternate headlines and tightening a paragraph that runs long. The output needs editing, and it starts from something rather than nothing.
- Structuring ContentTurning a messy set of notes into an outline with sensible headings is work it does well.
- Clustering and ClassificationSorting a few hundred keywords or questions into themes is fast and reliable, and it's tedious by hand.
- Explaining Data You Already HavePaste in a crawl export or a Search Console table and it will summarize what's there accurately.
ChatGPT Can't See Your Website
ChatGPT has no access to your pages, which is the limit people run into first and the one that produces the most confident wrong answers.
Ask for an SEO audit and you'll get a document that looks like one. It will list the right categories, use the right terminology and read like the real thing. What it won't contain is anything measured from your actual site, because unless a tool is fetching and rendering your pages, the model is working from what it can recall about your domain plus the general pattern of what audits contain.
The result is findings that don't apply, missing findings that do, and no way to tell which is which without checking every line by hand.
Old Facts Come Back Sounding Certain
Models answer from what they absorbed and from whatever they can retrieve, and neither is guaranteed current.
In our own testing, both ChatGPT and Perplexity gave a company's old street address, years out of date, because it was still sitting in third-party listings. Asked about the same company's work, both repeated a directory profile that described a different line of business entirely.
Neither answer hedged. Both were delivered in the same even tone as the accurate parts. The output doesn't signal which parts to check, so plan on checking all of them.
Deciding What to Fix First Takes Business Context
Ask what to fix and you'll get a list. The list will be reasonable and roughly ordered by conventional wisdom, and conventional wisdom doesn't know that one of those pages drives most of your qualified inquiries while another exists because someone asked for it in 2019.
Prioritization needs the commercial context: which products carry margin, which buyers are worth reaching, what sales says the objections are. A model has none of it unless you supply it.
What This Means for Doing It Yourself
You can get real work out of these tools without an agency. For a lot of SEO work, that's a useful split. Let ChatGPT chew through the repetitive production work, and keep the decisions yourself.
Two habits make the difference. Verify every factual claim it produces about your own business, your market or your competitors, because those are where it's most likely to be wrong and most likely to sound certain. And paste your own data into the prompt instead of asking it to recall yours, since its answers about your business are only as accurate as what you give it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT Do an SEO Audit?
Not on its own. It can't fetch and render your pages, so it can't check status codes, redirects, canonical tags, render-blocking scripts or whether a template is emitting duplicate meta tags. It's useful for interpreting an export from a crawler that did measure those things.
Can AI Agents Do SEO?
An agent with browsing and tool access solves part of the problem, because it can actually fetch pages and run checks. It still needs someone to define what matters, and it will report a technically correct finding with no sense of whether it's worth anyone's afternoon.
Does AI SEO Really Work?
It depends what's meant. Using AI to do the work faster works and is normal practice. Buying a product that promises AI will get you cited in AI answers is a different claim, and nobody can guarantee an engine names you.
Is There an AI Tool That Does SEO End to End?
Several are sold that way. They're competent at the mechanical parts, the same parts ChatGPT handles, and they run into the same wall on judgment. A tool can tell you a title tag is too long. Deciding what the page should be about is the actual job.
Should We Use It to Write Our Content?
For drafts and structure, yes. For anything a buyer will judge you on, the specifics have to come from you. The pages that earn citations contain facts that exist nowhere else, and a model can't supply those because it doesn't have them. More on that in is SEO dead.
