SEO
Method 21 runs SEO programs for industrial and complex B2B companies, and measures them against what buyers actually see: both the ranked results and the AI answers that increasingly stand in front of them. We have been doing search work for a long time, from Houston.
What an SEO program with Method 21 actually does
Three things, in order: it removes the technical reasons a site cannot be read or retrieved, it makes the company unmistakable as an entity, and it builds the evidence an answer can be built from. Rankings and citations are outputs of that work rather than separate services.
Every engagement opens with an assessment of technical health, entity clarity and competitive position. That becomes a prioritised roadmap, and the roadmap is what we execute against and report on. The technical half is measured against Google's own published thresholds, including the Core Web Vitals targets and its structured data guidelines.
Rankings alone no longer describe search visibility
Ranking first no longer guarantees being the source an answer cites. Through 2025 the overlap between what ranks in Google's top ten and what AI Overviews actually cite narrowed sharply, and AI answers increasingly draw on video, community and reference platforms alongside company sites.
Traditional ranking is still a strong input. It is no longer the gate. Ahrefs measured the overlap between Google's top ten and the pages AI Overviews cite falling from 76 percent in July 2025 to 38 percent, so a company can hold position one for its category term and still be absent from the answer a buyer reads above it.
This is also why the work is one program rather than two. The technical foundations, entity clarity and topical depth that earn citations are the same work that earns rankings.
What is Generative Search Signals?
Generative Search Signals is our name for the set of signals that determine whether an answer engine can retrieve, understand and cite a company. It is the mechanism inside the SEO program, not a product sold separately.
It covers three layers.
| Layer | What it governs | What we do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Retrievability | Whether a crawler that does not run JavaScript can read the page at all, and whether the site is present in the indexes each engine reads from | Server-rendered content, crawler access, index coverage in Google and Bing, page weight and response time |
| Entity clarity | Whether engines can tell who the company is, what it does and that the facts agree wherever they appear | One consistent name, description and set of facts across every page and profile, structured data, corroborating third party sources |
| Citable evidence | Whether any passage on the site is worth quoting as an answer | Answer-first page structure, specifics and figures rather than claims and material that exists nowhere else |
Why we lead with AI visibility
Because it is the fastest honest evidence available. Entity corrections can land almost immediately and mention rate can move within 30 to 60 days, while rankings and organic traffic on a competitive term generally take 6 to 12 months to tell you anything.
That matters for a client deciding whether the work is worth continuing. A program measured only on rankings asks for patience through the entire evaluation period. One that also measures citations has something real to show while the slower signals are still developing.
How that measurement works, and what moves it, is covered on AI visibility.
How a program is structured
Three phases, with the first two inside the initial term.
- Establish the baseline. Measure where the company currently appears across answer engines and search, for the questions its buyers actually ask. Most companies have never seen this number.
- Correct the foundation. Fix what prevents retrieval and understanding: rendering, crawl access, site structure, entity consistency, structured data and the pages that carry the most internal weight.
- Expand the evidence. Build the pages, data and third party corroboration that give answers something to cite, then keep them current.
What the work covers
| Area | Included |
|---|---|
| Technical | Rendering and crawlability, site architecture, Core Web Vitals, index coverage across Google and Bing, structured data |
| Entity | Name and description consistency, business profile accuracy, third party corroboration, knowledge graph presence |
| Content | Topic and question mapping, answer-first page structure, new pages, refreshes of pages that have gone stale |
| Authority | Earned links from publications with real readership, digital PR built on original data, presence on the platforms answers draw from |
| Measurement | Rankings, organic traffic and citation and mention share across answer engines, on one report |
The technical, on-page, authority and Generative Search Signals pages go deeper on each area.
How performance is reported
On one report, monthly, with rankings, traffic, leads and citation share together. Citations appear beside the commercial numbers rather than in a separate document, because a visibility metric that arrives on its own invites the question of what it was worth.
Reporting says what happened, what we did about it and what is next. If a month was flat, it says that.
Who this is for
Companies with a considered, technical sale: manufacturers, energy and oilfield services, industrial equipment and B2B firms whose buyers research before they ever make contact. The work suits organisations where the product is genuinely complicated and being described accurately matters.
It is a poor fit for anyone who needs leads next week. Search compounds and the early months are foundation work.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO, or is it SEO with a new name?
Mostly the same work, with a distinct layer on top. The technical foundations, entity clarity and topical depth are shared. What answer engines add is passage-level structure, corroboration across independent sources, and presence on the platforms those engines draw from. We treat it as one program because splitting it produces two half-programs.
Can you guarantee our company will be named in an AI answer?
No, and neither can anyone else. Answer engines change their outputs continuously and no vendor controls them. What we can do is measure where a company stands today, fix what demonstrably prevents it being retrieved and understood, and show the movement.
How long before we see movement?
Entity and technical corrections often show within weeks. Mention and citation rates commonly move in 30 to 60 days. Competitive rankings and the organic traffic that follows generally take 6 to 12 months. We report all three so the early signals are visible while the slower ones develop.
Do you work with companies outside Houston?
Yes. We are based in Houston and the industrial concentration here shapes what we know, but the work is not geographically limited.
Who does the work?
Method 21 does. Clients work directly with senior people rather than through an account manager relaying instructions to someone else.
