AEO, GEO and SEO: What Each Term Means

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Both describe getting your business named and cited when an AI system answers a question, and they're the same work under two acronyms. Neither replaces SEO, because both depend on the pages SEO produces.

AEO Stands for Answer Engine Optimization

An answer engine is anything that responds with an answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and Copilot all qualify. AEO is the practice of making your business the thing those systems name and the source they cite.

The work is concrete. Your pages have to be fetchable and readable without JavaScript executing, they have to answer questions in the form people ask them, and your company facts have to match everywhere they appear so the systems can tell that scattered mentions describe one business.

GEO Is the Same Idea Under a Different Acronym

Generative Engine Optimization came out of academic work and describes optimizing for systems that generate text instead of retrieving links. In practice, an agency selling GEO and an agency selling AEO will do the same things.

The two terms exist because the field named itself twice while nobody was in charge of the naming. The methods behind them are the same.

An Example of AEO in Practice

A manufacturer sells explosion-proof cameras. A buyer asks an AI assistant which suppliers make cameras certified for hazardous areas.

For that manufacturer to be in the answer, several things have to be true at once. The certifications have to be published as text on a page, not only inside a PDF datasheet. There has to be a page for that product category. One page listing forty products won't do it. The company name, location and description have to match across the website, the directories and the industry listings. And ideally something published on the site says something specific enough that an answer has a reason to cite it rather than a competitor.

None of those steps is exotic. Every one of them is also good SEO.

What Is Actually Different From Traditional SEO

Three things changed. The rest didn't, which is why these three are worth naming.

  • The Outcome MovedThe result used to be a position and a click. It's now being named in an answer, or being one of the sources behind it, which can happen with no visit at all.
  • Measurement Had to Be RebuiltRank trackers can't see this. Measuring it means asking the engines real questions and recording what they say, which is a different instrument.
  • Third-Party Presence Carries More WeightWhen we measured which sources AI answers draw on, Reddit, LinkedIn and directory profiles were cited more often than any individual company's own site.

What didn't change is longer than what did. Crawlable pages, clear information architecture, real expertise, consistent business facts and content that answers something are load-bearing for both.

Why We Do Not Sell AEO Separately

Method 21 doesn't have an AEO product or an AEO price. The work that gets a company cited in an AI answer is the work that gets it found in search, done to a standard that satisfies a stricter reader.

Selling it as a separate line would mean either charging twice for the same work or implying the SEO program was leaving it out. We treat it as the reason the SEO work is worth doing now, and we measure it as its own outcome. The framework we use for it is described in Generative Search Signals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is AEO vs SEO?

SEO aims at being found through a search engine's results. AEO aims at being named and cited inside a generated answer. AEO runs on the same foundations, so it's better understood as what SEO has to achieve now, not as a separate discipline.

What Does AEO Stand For?

Answer Engine Optimization. An answer engine is any system that returns an answer rather than a list of links, which covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot.

What Is GEO in SEO?

Generative Engine Optimization, which means optimizing to appear in text that AI systems generate. Watch for the collision with the older use of GEO for geographic or local SEO, which is a different subject entirely.

What Is AI SEO Called Now?

There's no settled name. AEO, GEO, AI SEO, LLM SEO and answer engine optimization all circulate and all point at the same work. The vocabulary will settle eventually; the practice is already stable.

Will AEO Replace SEO?

No, because it depends on it. An answer engine builds its answer from pages it can crawl, read and trust. Remove the SEO foundations and there's nothing for it to draw on.

Is GEO Replacing SEO?

Same answer. The acronym is newer and the dependency runs the same direction.

What Is the LLM Equivalent of SEO?

AEO or GEO, depending on which term you encounter first. If someone offers you both as separate services, they're selling the same work twice.
