How to Measure AI Visibility

Ask the engines the questions your buyers actually ask, record every answer with its sources, then count two things separately: how often you're named, and how often your site is cited. Those two numbers move independently, and the distance between them tells you which problem you have.

Being Named and Being Cited Are Different Results

An answer can recommend your company without linking to you, and it can quote your page without ever saying who you are. Both count as visibility and they call for opposite work.

Named without cited means the engines know you from somewhere else: directories, review profiles, forum threads. Your reputation is doing the work and your site isn't contributing. Cited without named means your pages are useful enough to quote and your company isn't the takeaway, which usually points at content that answers the question without establishing who's answering.

Collapsing both into one score hides which of those you're looking at, so track them as separate columns from the start.

AI Visibility Decides Whether You Are Evaluated at All

The buyer's journey used to open with a search and a page of results to work through. It now often opens with a question to an assistant and a shortlist of three to five companies in the reply. The buyer evaluates the shortlist. A company that isn't on it hasn't been ranked lower; it's absent from the process, because there's no second page to scroll to.

That moves the decisive moment earlier than any ranking report can see. By the time a prospect reaches your site, the assistant has already described who you are and named who else to consider, and in our measurement those descriptions came from Google Business Profiles, Clutch and LinkedIn far more often than from company websites. Being named at that stage is the difference between a visit that arrives half-convinced and one that never arrives.

So measuring visibility means checking whether you're on the shortlist while it's still being written. What that involves for a specific company is covered on our AI visibility page.

Start From Questions Buyers Ask, Not Keywords You Track

The most common mistake is feeding a rank tracker's keyword list into an AI engine. Nobody types "b2b seo services houston" into ChatGPT. They type a sentence.

Two sources give you real questions. The first is Google's own People Also Ask boxes for the terms you already track, which is a direct readout of what people ask around your category. The second is the conversational form of your buying queries, written the way someone actually asks: who should a manufacturer hire for this, what does the process involve, is this worth doing.

Both belong in the set, and they behave differently enough that they're worth labeling and reporting apart. When we ran ours, informational questions and buying questions produced almost no overlap in which companies got named.

Run Every Question Against Every Engine, and Store the Raw Answer

Store the full response text, the sources and a timestamp for each question and engine combination. Two reasons this matters.

The first is that the scoring is a reading of the answer, not the answer itself. When you discover that a pattern you were matching on was wrong, having the raw text lets you re-score everything you've already collected instead of paying to ask again.

The second is that engines report their sources differently. ChatGPT writes links into the prose. Perplexity writes bare reference markers and returns the URLs in a separate field. Reading only the visible text scores every Perplexity answer as uncited, which is a mistake we made on our first run and caught only because the reference markers were plainly there.

What a Score Is Worth, and What It Is Not

An absolute percentage means very little on its own. The number that carries information is the comparison against named competitors on the same questions on the same day.

In our September 2026 run across 534 answers, the most-named agency appeared in 3.6 percent of them. Read alone, that sounds like failure. Read against the field, where no competitor exceeded it and most sat below one percent, it describes a category nobody has consolidated yet.

So pick five to ten competitors, track them by name and by domain, and report share rather than score.

How Often to Re-Measure

Monthly is enough for most businesses, and quarterly is defensible if the question set is broad. Two rules keep the comparison honest.

  • Hold the Question Set Still Between RunsAdding twenty easy questions raises the score without anything improving.
  • Restate History When the Set ChangesWhen you do retire a question, recalculate past runs on the current set so the trend line compares like with like.

Record why a question was retired at the time you retire it. We cut twenty questions from our first set for asking whether SEO was dead, on the reasoning that we didn't want to appear in a negative frame. Those turned out to be the two highest-demand questions in the whole set, and the decision was reversed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is AI Visibility?

How often AI systems name your business, or cite your site, when they answer a question you should be an answer to. It's distinct from rankings, because an answer can name you without any search result being involved.

How Can I Check My AI Visibility?

At the smallest scale, ask the engines twenty questions your buyers ask and write down who gets named. That's crude and it's real data. Doing it at a scale that supports a trend means automating the asking and storing the answers.

What Is a Good AI Visibility Score?

There's no benchmark worth quoting, because the number depends entirely on your question set. A narrow set of branded questions produces a high score that means nothing. Compare against competitors on identical questions instead.

How Does AI Visibility Affect the Buyer's Journey?

It moves the shortlist to the very start. A buyer who asks an assistant for recommendations gets three to five names before running a single search, and the companies not named aren't considered at all. Measurement tells you whether you're on that list at the stage where it's still being built.

How Do I Get AI Visibility?

Publish pages that answer real questions directly, keep your company facts identical everywhere they appear and make sure your content is readable without JavaScript running. The terms are explained on our AI SEO page.

Is There a Tool for Tracking AI Citations?

Several exist and more launch monthly. The thing to check before buying is which engines are covered, whether it separates being named from being cited and whether it restates history when your question set changes. Without that, a trend line can rise or fall only because the questions changed.
